Poland: Festival of alternative Jewish culture to open in Poznan

The 4th edition of the Tzadik Poznan Festival will start in the central-west city of Poznan on 30 July. During three days the public will enjoy various concerts, film screenings and a big out-door final concert. The Tzadik Festival like every year will gather in Poznan respected foreign and Polish artists of the alternative Jewish arts under the patronage of a famous factory of original sounds – Tzadik Records owned by John Zorn.

Among performers are Tim Sparks (American guitarist), Yves Weyh (French accordionist), Raphael Roginski (Polish guitarist) and Maciej Filipczuk (Polish violinist). One of the special festival projects is a gala concert of above mentioned Tim Sparks, a respected jazz/folk musician who recorded at the Tzadik Records four alternative albums. The concert accompanied by American and Polish musicians will be devoted to the traditional Klezmer compositions by Naftul Brandwein. The second joint project under the banner of the Tzadik Poznan Festival is a Polish-French quintet led by Yves Weyh (known to the public from a band Zakarya). Musicians will present traditional Jewish melodies with elements of Klezmer, Balkan, Sephardic and Galician elements.

The festival organizers plan also a premier of a street- play “Rondele – lullabies for eternal sleep” by a Polish singer Lena Piekniewska. The performance to the accompaniment of a violinist Maciej Filipczuk and several other jazz artists is aimed to awaken the former Jewish quarter of Poznan. The courtyard of one tenement on the old Dominikanska Street will become a scene for the play that brings back the memories of Poznan Jewry.
